I was mistaken about the RF module details--the text at the link I
posted said 64 modules for a 50 KW rig in levels of 100 to 1000 watts
each and 8 FETs per board.
I don't know much at all about the smaller solid state rigs. I think
they may be pulse width modulated. I have read about that but like a
lot of technical stuff, for me reading and understanding can happen,
but no retention unless I am applying it. So I can't explain PWM now
at all.
One thing about broadcast rigs that makes them easier to work out than
ham rigs is that they only have to work on one frequency. The guy
who has been making and selling the ham solid state AM transmitters
has managed to get one to work on 160 and 75 and now, 75 and 40, but
the 40 meter part was as I understand it, a challenge. I don't know
enough about it to know what the technical hurdles were but it seems
that the class D rigs are easier to design and build on low
frequencies.
