The TMC adaptors definitely work for 455Khz. I think if you use
manual tuning you can also use them for 500Khz, for instance for the
51J/R-388. I am not entirely sure of this.
The Hammarlund adaptor is the more sophisticated with means to
feed AVC to the receiver and a good notch filter. The AVC in the TMC
adaptors (MSR series and GSB-1) work strictly on the internal
circuitry. That's fine for receivers that do not have external AVC
connections such as most of the 51J series. Both use very low frequency
LC filters to obtain a desirable pass band, i.e., reasonably flat top
with steep skirts and good ultimate attenuation. From the published
graphs I think they are very similar. Both boxes have their own audio
frequency amplifiers but have low level outputs to go back to the
receiver. I have no experience with either but both companies made high
quality products. The Hammarlund adaptors, especially the rack mount
version seem to be quite rare. The TMC GSB-1, meant to go with the
GPR-90 is also rather rare but the various versions of the MSR do show
up sometimes.
