[Boatanchors] News story about risk of high altitude EMP

Brian,

Sounds like something I need to investigate, Thank You. I am not the SME you are, just an average guy that has lived long enough to know that as a human, I'm really only good at making mistakes, and the more I know, the more I just don't know, hence the caveat, "my understanding".

I did noticed you stated "mains", leaving the brunt of my point, the ubiquitous transformers boat anchor (BA) gear simply cannot run without. My concern is that these small signal (small when compared to a typical mains) transformer just are not available in the same quantities they were when tube gear was the norm. Sixty years ago you could run down to the local store and have dozens of every type on hand. Today's it seems one must scour the hamfest, Internet, ebay, yahoo group, email reflector, etc with the hope that something is available. Imagine placing the hopes in a plan of using tube gear as an emergency scenario after said EMP or other similar event. I think I would simply have a good plan with known good backups in a safe, well protected (electrically, environmentally, etc) to have ready when the need arises. Pulled out to test and critical spares on hand. The average "man on the street" just doesn't have the same resources as a government that robs Peter to pay Paul. (I'm referring to the U.S. govt at this point as I have no knowledge of what it's like in VK land)

I will research those terms, again, Thank You.

All my best,

Mike
