[Boatanchors] Plugging Chassis Holes

>From personal experience, I had to "plug" two meter holes that were on the
meter assembly of a classic Collins 20K broadcast transmitter. This
assembly is aluminum which required an aluminum welder expert. You cannot
tell the refinished panel. Oh, yes, the cost was nearly $90.

In my opinion, if you have a classic radio, then, quit messing with body
putty, JB Weld, etc., take the panel to a professional car body shop to get
the job done right.

In the past, I restored a Collins 30K-1 transmitter that some "idio" just
had to drill holes for, I suppose, ventilation. I used a MIG welder, then
ground the surface and applied a little body putty before repainting the
cabinet in Saint James Gray Wrinkle.

A classic radio preserving is certainly worth a few buck to have a
professional doing the job.

I cut a piece of metal exact fit and try to ping it a few places with a
punch around the perimeter to hold in place
Then I solder it in place all around the seam
Clean and polish and it is done, secure, depending on finishes involved can
be almost transparent repair

How do you guys PLUG steel chassis holes when refurbishing an old radio? I
have been epoxying a backer plate inside a chassis and then filling in on
top with steel epoxy, then sanding and painting. This seems to work well
unless you have obstructions underneath and can live with a visible plate
inside the chassis.

Is there a good way to do this without a backer plate?
