I got a message from Bob Sullivan and he told me powder coat paint does not like to attach to epoxy filler.  Knowing this, your method seems favorable.  Bob says he welds a lot of holes closed.  Your method is surely less extreme.  As I mentioned,  I always used an epoxied backer plate out of fear the patch would "POP" out without it.  Your pinning and soldering makes a lot of sense.  A backer plate works a lot of times but if the inside is not accessible, the backer plate can't always be attached. Powder coating is very popular these days so your method makes even more sense to me these days.

I cut a piece of metal exact fit and try to ping it a few places with a 
punch around the perimeter to hold in place
Then I solder it in place all around the seam
Clean and polish and it is done, secure, depending on finishes involved can 
be almost transparent repair
