I do much the same.  I run some pretty strict rules in my IE, Microsoft 
Essentials and scan will MalwareBytes frequently.  I also use CC Cleaner to 
keep my registry clean.  If you have never used CC Cleaner to look at the 
registry, you may be surprised.

I also have my IE set to not allow tracking of my browsing and for stronger 
browsing one can use InPrivate Browsing.  I have given up on Avast, McAfee 
and the other add ons that offer protection.  I also don't surf to sites 
that may harbor problems waiting to download to your computer.

I know the ones that Uncle was using when I was there.

Trend, Antigen, and a few others.

I only know what I have observed with regard to MacAfee.  Too much gets
past it.
