Rob brings up a point here I wonder about. I have a couple of soldering
stations made by Weller (Cooper Tools) and have had them for over 20 years.
They have performed flawlessly as has their 100/140 watt gun that I bought
in 1979, so I am wondering what makes the Hakko so desirable? Is there
something about them that makes them stand out?
I see references to them all the time in various forums and wonder why they
enjoy the reputation. I have not had a requirement to replace anything I
have and this line is new to me, so I wonder if some of you will share why
they prefer the line, and which one.

Best soldering iron I have ever had ( and currently use) is a basic
Weller, the base with the spring holder and on-off switch and iron. A
few years ago a guy was at the Indianapolis hamfest with a box full of
them selling them for 5 bucks each. I fished one out that looked okay
and took it home figuring I could risk 5 dollars. It's worked so well
I wish I had bought one or two more but that's how it is with
hindsight.
