[Boatanchors] Crystal set

There are a number of electronics catalogs on the web. Its
interesting that most of them have kits for crystal sets and for very
simple tube radios in them. All meant for educational purposes.
Transistors are even simpler, no HV to worry about, but very few
electronic products are constructed of descrete components these days.
Everything on one chip. One can make electronic analogs of capacitors
and inductors. You can make a reasonable detector from rusty razor
blades (they do have to be rusty) but where are they? Either throw
away razors or electric (also eventually throw away). Someone at work
wondered why I bothered with Morse code, "its obsolete" said he. Well I
didn't even try to explain. For one thing I was not quite sure if he
was having me on or not. I think its the change in some aspects of
culture that mainly bother me. I am quite happy with modern deveopments
that make life better or easier, certainly with advances in medicine,
but it bothers me that people who are not that much younger than I am
have absolutely never heard of things that were common experience not so
long ago (and I do not mean horses and buggies).
