Your incoming email stacks one on top of the other, with the last one received on the top.

If the top one is a response to an earlier post which is further down the stack, you read that one first, then later as you work your way down, you finally read the earlier post.

Also some email providers, like Comcast (mine), don't always deliver email in a timely manner, sometimes holding several for periods of time, then release all in a flurry.

Email is not perfect.

FWIW:
I sent the original post to Boatanchors list at 8:28 EDT.  I received 
the first email from the buyer at 8:34 then sent the sold email to 
Boatanchors at 8:44.
