Reason: To prevent Ground Loops. If a shield is grounded at both ends the potential may be different from one end to the other. Hum can be produced in the center wire because of this especially in very low current carrying wires such as in audio circuits. The idea of grounding one end is to "break" the loop. It most likely won't matter which end is grounded. The most convenient end would be my choice.

I've noticed that some construction articles involving the use of shielded cables advise that the shield be connected at only one end but they don't say which end, i.e. near or far. Also, when is this practice most useful and why?
