I tried to sent this earlier but sent it to Joe, sorry Joe!
This is just conjecture on my part but I bet when the modern light weight receivers and transmitters came on the scene during the 60's and 70's a lot of hams starting referring to the old heavyweights as boatanchors as a derogatory term and it stuck, of course the term is now a positive term unlike years ago.
