OK, been reading this thread for a long time. Here's MY opinion: If you don't like it, I don't care.
Hams are the cheapest of the cheap. In today's economy, there is NOTHING wrong looking for a deal.
I have been a ham for over 50 years. I am a retired EE and have a huge collection of both radios and test equipment, mostly purchased on eBay.
I have never lived close to a major city where surplus sales and hamfests are frequent. Yes, I have been to Dayton several times. UGGG!
Like everything in life, purchasing on eBay is a learning experience. I could give lots of 'tips' on how to score great deals, but these lessons can only be learned by experience. The scum that try to buy items from widows will never learn these lessons.
For instance, I met good 'ole Radiomart back when he was called "Multicom2000', and told me he had "unlimited money" from his pals back in GB.
I ended up living about 10 miles from him and been to his 'house'. Karma always comes around. He is ... never mind.....
But I digress. .....
If you don't like eBay, don't use it! How much more simple does that have to be?
EBay has provided me with the opportunity to acquire equipment that I could only drool about as a youth.
Every eBay hater wants to rip off a widow who has an SX-115 and "doesn't know what it is". They will brag about this until their widow sells it 'cause she doesn't know what it is. ha ha
Yep, karma is a bitch!

Is there any kind of general consensus on exactly what is or isn't a
'boatanchor'? I'm a 72 yo and BAs to me are the post-WW2 tubes sets made for the
commercial (vice military) market on up to the advent and eventual dominance of
the so-called 'solid state' rigs. It seems clear to me that others' definitions
go back to a somewhat earlier time and do include re-cycled military gear. What
is the general consensus, please.

Trouble is, the term "boatanchors" is so misused and nebulous, it's
difficult to define today. A Morrow receiver, MBR-5, is all tubes, weighs
11 pounds, and was introduced in 1955 (roughly 60 years ago). Is this a
"boatanchor"? A National HRO-500 is all solid-state, weighs 32 pounds,
and was introduced in 1964 (roughly 50 years ago). Is this a
"boatanchor"? In some minds, some might consider both to be a
"boatanchor", or one or the other, or neither. Some probably believe a
"boatanchor" has to weigh some minimum weight, and/or can't be lifted
above your head and/or shoulders and/or has to be lifted by two people to
get it on a work bench. Maybe a "boatanchor" is defined by how big the
knobs are but then, "what is big?". 1 inch diameter, 2 inch diameter, 3
inch diameter, etc.

In the UK an antique is something 100 years old. In the USA it is anything 25
years old or if the seller can convince you it is!

A sale does not occur when buyer and seller agree on value. A sale does
occur when they agree on price. They disagree on value.
If I sell a HQ-170 for 100 to Bill, I
perceive 100 to be of more value to me than the radio.
Bill perceives the radio to be of more value to him than his 100.
Just a thought

About 20 years ago I was at a large outdoor 'fest with a couple of friends.
Another guy we knew pretty well had a tailgate set up and was selling. As it
happened, one of our guys was using a motorized chair. He could walk fine
but used it to save energy at bigger hamfests.
We came up with a practical joke. One of the guys borrowed the chair, put on
a big straw hat over his head, slumped in the chair and motored over to said
table. Without his face being seen, he pointed a twitching finger at an old
military antenna tuner and asked in a frail, weak voice 'how much is
that?'.
Unaware that he knew the guy in the chair, Bob the seller said 'well old
timer if you can use this, its yours, free.' Imagine the look on
the seller's face when the wheel chair bound geezer jumped up out of the
chair, grabbed the tuner, said 'gee thanks' and sprinted off with it!
Needless to say we all cracked up laughing. The tuner was returned and all
were happy. The targeted seller laughed the most.
Not intended as a slap against wheel-chairees. Gawd knows, I'll be there
soon enuf!
73,
