There's phenolic and then there's phenolic ...
The type used by Heathkit is quite different from that used by Collins.
What happens is
the cheap phenolic absorbs the spray and swells up, thus distorting the
wafer. You can
guess what happens when you turn the switch.
But, the advice given is appropriate. Use of a syringe (non medical
types aavailable on
the "evil empire"), or a toothpick as an applicator is highly recommended.
