Maybe you are asking only about commercially-made receivers.  In the home
made category, the late Bruce Vaughan NR5Q was intensely into building
regens in his later years.  What he considered his ultimate design is
in his book "Surviving Technology" which was published just before he 
died.

He wrote quite a few articles in Electric Radio magazine, and I believe
you can get the book from that source.
