Rod, let me emphasize: As a frequent buyer of eBay drek, I had no
problem with the price of the bag of knobs. It's unclear why you (and
some others) have missed that. As for calling for info, hopefully
they're down the block or your phone charges will eat away at your
discount pricing at some point, It is incumbent on a company to provide
a reasonable item for sale at a reasonable price, without raking their
customers over the coals for shipping to hide additional profits.
There's nothing wrong with making a profit (just look at the Old
Testament --it's filled with them!) but "overhead" encompasses all costs
involved in the creation of a product up to the point of sale (including
packaging for shipment). It's not illegal to low-ball a price by
back-ending some of the costs into the shipping price. But that doesn't
speak well of a company's moral fiber. As we become more and more
dependent on non-brick-and-motar sources for parts for our aging radios
it's important to remember the words of Ed McMahon who argued, "/Whom/
do you trust?"
The only thing I'm advocating is that a company play fair with us who
are attracted by bargains only to find ourselves skewered at the cash
register. Not only does that provoke outrage in general but it also
discourages the hobby --and we can't afford that with our dwindling
membership rolls.
