Don't feel too bad....  The earlier cages DID have to be removed.  The B-Line made the cover 
removable.  The TR-3 solved the problem by not having a top!

On your cable question.....  The reason was lowest capacity/ft since it shunts the PreMixer 
signal between units.  Drake used Belden 8421 shielded cable, which externally is just about the 
same as the rest of the audio grade cables.   Heath used RG-62, but it is difficult to solder, 
much bigger, requires MUCH bigger turn radii, etc., etc......  Paul, K0UYA on the DrakeRadio 
reflector bought a roll of 8421 some time ago, (since that is the only way it comes these days,) 
and has been selling it by the foot ever since!
