In all probability, it's the correct current rating, but not the correct characteristic.
The rating of 500 VA implies maximum allowable current of 500 / 120 = 4.1A
with resistive loads. Assuming a reactive load at max rating, the current could
easily get over 5A and immediately blow the fuse. GMA are a fast acting fuses.
Try to replace with a 5A slow blow fuse.
