     I am reminded of the early ads for the Hammarlund SP-600, I think this appears in the 1947 ARRL handbook but am not at home at the moment and can't look.  The ad features what looks like either a drawing or very heavily retouched photo.  It looks very much like the eventual production model but obviously has many differences.
.  The description of the circuits and tubes in the ad is completely different, all octal tubes and P-P audio and a calibrated band-spread dial.  Obviously, the project got completely re-designed before it saw the light of day.  It would be interesting to know the inside story.  I am sure there are many other examples of what you are talking about.
