[Boatanchors] 1950s EF Johnson Catalog - Anyone?

The Ranger II was introduced sometime in 1961.  The advertisements in the ARRL Handbooks are prepared usually in the third quarter into the fourth quarter of the previous year of publication.  As such, items manufactured in the previous year are generally advertised the following year.

There are, of course, exceptions to this where a company has prototypes of a unit that is to be introduced the next year and has advertisements already prepared.  However, sometimes this backfires as in the 4-page, full color, advertisements by Collins Radio Company that appears in the 1955 ARRL Handbook.

The 1955 ARRL Handbook introduces the 75A-4 receiver, the 30L-1 transmitter (NOT the later 30L-1 linear amplifier), and the 32W-1 SSB exciter.  Between the time the advertisements were submitted to the ARRL and published in the 1955 Handbook, Art Collins changed his mind and renamed the 30L-1 transmitter the KES-1 transmitter.  He also decided not to put the 32W-1 SSB exciter into general production.

If one looks close at the earlier KWS-1 advertisements, the escutcheon on the transmitter still has 30L-1 nomenclature.

Johnson Ranger transmitter by acquiring ARRL Amateur Radio Operator's Handbooks.  The original Ranger is featured in the 1955 Handbook all the way through (including) the 1961 Handbook.  I don't have a 1954 Handbook or a 1962 Handbook so I cannot say if the original Ranger is in either one of those.  However, there is no Johnson section in the 1963 Handbook.

Hi,

I have the 1962 ARRL Handbook and the Ranger II is in that one. I did
look at the other ads and nobody listed the original Ranger.
