[Boatanchors] S-38C BFO Question

One more thing, Curt: Those IF transformers have been known to go bad as the "home made" fixed mica capacitors have "sputtered" silver attached to the mica sheets. Over time some silver can migrate to the other side either through mica cracks or over and around the edges thus shorting out the caps or at least changing value and detuning the IF transformers. The fix is to cut these caps out and install new mica dip capacitors and then tune the IFs. That is why I tuned my IFs forst to make sure they tuned and did not contain bad mica caps. The caps in my IFs were just fine or a least for now OK.

Subject: [Boatanchors] S-38C BFO Question

Trying to resurrect an S-38C inherited from my father. Recapped and hears
AM well. CW/SSB received well only by coupling signal generator 455 kHz
signal to IF amp input. All attempts to improve operation by manipulating
the gimmick caps on 12AG7 IF input and output have failed. Would
appreciate advice from anyone who has encountered and corrected similar
issues. The gain when in "CW" is very low.
