Dick,
I loosen the screws in the coupler first, that way it can slide on the shaft instead of breaking when the front panel moves. On the side is fine but either hang the front panel off the edge or use a block to raise the side.
I use some wood blocks that I can clamp to the chassis to support it when upside down and stabilize it from tipping when it is on its side. Overkill perhaps but if a radio tips over while on its side damage to it or test gear on the bench is likely.
