John,
I hadn't heard of it until the issue came up!
It drove the Health Physicists bonkers!
I've seen ONE person using TIG in a shirt! He sure regretted it!
Looked like he had spent the weekend at the beach! He learned his lesson.
Anyone not familiar with SMAW welding, it is the flux coated "stick"
welding.
Didn't mean to confuse anyone!
Try using an Oxyacetylene welding rig when they have no filler rods!
Twice I had to scrounge up a coat hanger to use. It actually did a
pretty good job. I was surprised!
I've been around the huge factory welding machines that distribute
powdered flux in front of the welding head.
The most interesting method of welding that I have had the experience to
have used, is the Plasma Arc. I got to give it a go while at Hobart for
my welding inspection course. I got to weld two cigarette foil wrappers
together! That was interesting.
Now they use the Plasma arc for cutting and about anything else. I did
mine in the late '70s. It was pretty new then. I hadn't seen one
outside Hobart back then.
