Wasn't that P. T. Barnum, that made the 'sucker' quote?
I listen to Brother Stair when I need a chuckle, but mostly as a propagation check.
How anyone, today can say;
"there were NO dinosaurs"
"the earth is only 5,000 years old"
is just beyond me!

I know there are some folks here who worked in SWBC.
As you know, most of it's gone now. |
But there are still a few big stations out there in the
U.S. running multiple 100KW transmitters 24/7 and
all they broadcast is religious "fringe" material.
One old guy who claims to have a personal
hot-line to God is on several of these all day,
every day.
I do not understand the economics of running
these stations. They've got big maintenance costs,
staffing and monster electric bills, yet one source
tells me that the "Jesus Radio" audience runs about
200 people on a good day and many hours with
no one listening at all. The charge for hours of
programming on these stations isn't very high,
but 24/7 can amount to a lot each month.
I don't get it. The math just "don't add-up."
How do these stations afford this?
Surely "Brother Stair" doesn't get enough from
the 200 people listening to him to support
multiple 100KW transmitters, 24/7?
What am I missing here?

Well, they pay no property, income, or inheritance taxes and contributions
are tax deductible. And there are folks who believe in the message and
have very deep pockets.
Just look at all the property owned by churches of all sorts. They have
accumulated the wealth of the ages. It must be hundreds of billions in the
US alone.
YMMV,

Greetings to the group,
I just wanted to let you all know that I have received the DVD of the
'Empire of the Air' the begining of Radio documentary by Ken Burns. It is
about 2 hours but it really is interesting and brought back a lot of things
even I could remember or heard about. It's mostly in black and white but the
sound is as original as I can remember it back in the 40's on the old Philco
cabinet model radio. If any of you have Netflix you can order it. That's all
folks.
Best regards,
Ralph Howes

I sure don't know the answer, but here is my guess. Christianity in
general, and some sects more than others, stresses doing missionary work.
Really doing missionary work is hard - you have to meet people face
to face and convince them to listen to your message. It's much easier
to give money to other people to do the work. And the radio preachers
convince their faithful listeners that there is a world of people out
there hungry to hear the gospel preached to them, in English yet.
In addition to short wave, there is an oversupply of religious stations
in the FM broadcast band. Some of this may involve politics - there is
a limited number of FM frequencies in the nonprofit portion of the FM
band, and the builders of these stations may be trying to occupy all
of them to keep out NPR and other broadcasters.

Ralph,
Empire Of The Air is great and so is the book (Tom Lewis is the author). I've
read it twice over the years.? It's out of print but can be purchased used on
Ebay.
