Straight tin-lead alloys like a little copper and over time will etch
(erode) the tip chemically. That was the reason for the Ersin SavBit alloy. It
had a small amount (mayber 1% or less) of copper added to the alloy. Didn't
erode tips. The downside was that it was impossible to get a shiny solder
joint. They all looked like cold joints. We had a 1st Class Airdale throw
a roll of it the length of a 50'x100' shop one day when he finally figured
out it was the solder's fault that he couldn't get proper looking joints.
:-)
