Ian,
The most difficulty I had doing a total restore of the BC-342 was
the removing the tapered pins in the main tuning and bandswitch
assemblies, to get it really apart.
I had to make a special punch and heat up the shaft to remove the
tapered pins. It was a very difficult procedure to keep from
damaging the shaft or any bearings near them. What I did was a
total rebuild of the gear assembly, which may not be needed in your
case.
The radio turned out to be one of the best SWL receivers of that
vintage. With the two RF stages, the selectivity is perfect for SWL
reception and CW on the ham bands. The BC-348 gets a lot of press,
but the BC-342 was a better receiver in my opinion, although a much
heavier receiver!
