Richard...believe me when I say that there is virtually no space between these plates! It will be tough even sliding a piece of fine emery or 1000 grit paper in there! It's amazing that the thing doesn't arc under normal conditions but I suspect that when not arcing it must be right on the verge...excellent penny-pinching or someone in engineering got lucky when the darn thing worked.
