Actually, IGY went from July 1, 1957 to December 31, 1958. IGY was the
study of 11 Earth sciences with over 60 participating countries. Lots of
interesting scientific information was shared among these countries
during this time. The Van Allen radiation belts were also discovered
during this time and Sputnik I was sent into space.
