All the batteries seem to be chinese garbage now.
I use a lot in test equipment, and all the types I've tried
will leak even before their expiration date 
if they get a little hot, like in a truck tool chest.
The advice to remove batteries if you're going to shelve
a piece of test gear for even a few days is sound,
especially now.
If someone knows of a decent brand, I'd also be interested.
