[Boatanchors] BLACK BEAUTIES ETC

A member of our vintage radio club recently purchased a fairly rare and
expensive radio, decided to "re-form" the electrolytics and leave the "black
beauty" (read paper) by-pass caps intact as none was shorted and he wished
to maintain the "original" look.

After a few hours of use, the radio failed, taking out the transformer
(unfused of course) and some other key items. As he was not able to locate
an exact replacement power transformer, he was forced to install a
substitute which works fine....but, alas, is not "original".

Moral of the story: install a 3-wire line cord (for safety) and fuse,
replace ALL the by-pass caps and electrolytics and check the micas for
leakage IF you want to run your precious radio for a long time. Consign all
the caps you remove to the circular file!
