Thanks to all who responded to this. You have confirmed
my analysis of the circuit. I saw the 500 ohm resistor but
have not checked it for value. I think this box is just not
meant for low dissipation resistors. I mainly wanted to see
if it was a decent capacitor checker and it seems to be. It
has a number of electrolytic caps in it that probably should
be replaced. I have no memory of where I got it but think
it was given to me years ago by someone who was cleaning out
their junk. To me nothing that will do its job is junk.
