For what it's worth, I did break the insulation material on one of those shaft couplers some years ago. However, I repaired it and it was then better then new. I drilled out the rivets and replaced the broken wafer with a piece of thin printed board G-10 material. (I think the PC material was around 1/16th inch thick or maybe even a little thinner.) I cut it to the same diameter as the old one and mounted it with miniature nuts and bolts. It worked out great. (Yes I etched the copper off of it.)

"This morning I successfully pulled the front panel off without any difficulty. The secret is exactly what you guys mentioned, keeping any force OFF of the fragile shaft coupling during removal. I took some photos that I will share with the group so folks can see what that coupling looks like. THis is my first foray into the guts of the VFO beyond simply opening the side panel and replacing the 18K."
