FWIW - Here's a 2E26 Ranger that I picked up at a hamfest some years back
http://www.virhistory.com/ham/ranger.htm
I believe a club had converted it to be a Novice loaner (when did Novices
get VFO privileges?)
Besides stripping out the audio stages, they put in a 2E26 running off the
LV supply and with an extra cathode resistor.
Sorry I don't have any more details as I converted it back to stock.
Note on the PA cathode resistor - the Navy AN/FRT-17 that I just got back
on the air has a 4-400 PA with a rheostat in the filament xfmr center tap
to ground - for cranking back to 1/2 or 1/4 power as desired (ganged with
another rheostat in the 4-125 modulator filament circuit) - I'd never seen
that before.
Cheers,
Nick
