Olaf,

The coating is called Moisture and Fungus Proofing varnish.  or MFP for 
short.  The only two practical ways to remove it are mechanical (scraping) or 
thermal (soldering iron).  There is in fact an MFP solvent available, or was 
10 or 15 years ago.  But the smallest put up that I was able to find was 5 
gallons.  And the price was something like $85/gallon.  I havent looked 
recently.
