Thanks for all the suggestions!? The surgery was a success!

I didn't have the suggested small awl (added now to my shopping list) but I have some sturdy dental tools that were slender enough to get under one end of that ring and, as Bob & John described, I worked it out of its groove a bit and over onto the shaft, then worked around the remainder of the ring until it was all on the shaft & could be slipped off. You do have to be careful about finger placement, 'cause if (when) the tool slips, it's easy to get stabbed.

As Paul & Ron stated, it was not a hard springy metal but rather soft. I thought I remembered the metal as being harder, and much more difficult to pull out of its groove, but I didn't have the dental tools to work with back then. Cleaning out the hardened grease gunk was easy with a little Liquid Wrench, Q-tips & paper towel bits. Then, as Bob said, it was not hard to reform it and press back ovet the shaft and squeeze it back into its groove. A very tiny amout of 3-in-1 oil was wicked into it and now it works like new.

Again, thanks to everyone who replied, & 73!

Subject: [Boatanchors] Removing potentiometer shaft question

I'm trying to repair a potentiometer with a stuck shaft.? Solvents and new oil
only temporarily loosen it.? It gets stuck again overnight.?

Has anyone discovered a practical way to remove the snap ring that secures a
pot's quarter inch shaft so that it can be removed, cleaned, lubed and
reassembled?? Is this do-able?? Efforts of mine in the past have only destroyed
the ring.?

Thanks & 73,
