[Boatanchors] Removing potentiometer shaft question

I've done this a zillion times... I use a thin awl to lift one open end of the ring
(not a 'snap ring', it's made of fairly pliable metal), then pull on both ends to
enlarge the ring and finally slip it off along the shaft. I then put a drop of
WD-40 between the shaft and bushing and leave it for a while. In a few
hours it's easy to tap the shaft out. Then, buff the shaft with #000 steel wool
to remove all corrosion, until smooth; lubricate, spray some contact cleaner
with lubricant on the track and slider, and reassemble.

>I'm trying to repair a potentiometer with a stuck shaft.? Solvents and new oil only temporarily loosen it.? It gets stuck again overnight.?

>Has anyone discovered a practical way to remove the snap ring that secures a pot's quarter inch shaft so that it can be removed, cleaned, lubed and reassembled?? Is this do-able?? Efforts of mine in the past have only destroyed the ring.?
