[Boatanchors] Backlash in a National capacitor

With the help of the HRO site that Lee pointed me at, the backlash is now
gone.
And I now understand the term 'preloading' that I vaguely recall seeing
mentioned
in this context, but it didn't mean anything until now.
There is some light humor on the HRO website: "Be careful of the three
springs that load
the split-gear. They sometimes come off their mounting pegs but they are
easy to reinstall".
Perhaps this depends on one's definition of 'easy'.
The tuning shaft is still too stiff I think although when the micrometer
dial is in place the feel
is fairly good. The drag must be coming from the bearings where the rotor
shaft passes
through the gearbox sides. I don't see what can be done about this without
complete
disassembly.
