If it is a device with a somewhat fixed load i.e. receiver, you could try using a motor start/run capacitor in series with the primary. Use 30uf /100 watts and use 430v Polypropylene caps; they have no ESR to speak of. The use of the cap also reduces inrush if you are using solid state rectifiers.
I know it sounds a bit unusual, but try it, it works. The 30uf/100 watts will bring the line voltage from 122 to about 115. Using less capacity will bring it down further.
No, the cap wont explode or damage the radio and the cap doesn’t even get warm, its loafing!
