Dick,
A homebrew SSB transmitter is a pretty significant undertaking,
especially in view of parts availability, and even more so if multi-band
operation is anticipated. While phasing networks turn up from time to
time, the other components can be a challenge even to duplicate
something like the W2EWL "Cheap and Easy" phasing rig. And it's
probably harder to find a suitable filter and BFO crystals to make a
filter-type exciter.
As an alternative, I would suggest your friend look for a Hallicrafters
HT-37. They were sold in such numbers that they often go for low
prices and back in the 60s the HT-37/Drake 2B combination was very
popular. A cosmetically challenged HT-37 or one with a blown power
transformer (which can be worked-around) shouldn't bring more then
$50-75, a terrific bargain IMHO. They're great rig and the perfect
mate for a 2B.
