Just to show the power of the Internet, I was noticing a lot of Boatanchor reflector activity recently relative to WWII TCS Rx/Tx units. Well, last night I was contacted by an 83 year old gentleman in Beaumont, Texas who said he was surfing the Internet (good for him) and came up with my website section on restoring an old TCS system from WWII. Aside- I have since found out that those things were actually still in backup service on Navy ships in 1973 .....that's a long life.
Anyway this gentleman was thrilled to read the little summary about them since he had used one in Ft Monmouth? in the early 50's and had a complete system covered up in his house. Since he's 83 and confined to a wheelchair his only hamming today is with a HT and the TCS unit has not been used for 40 years. His concern was that the old stuff would end up in the dump somewhere and he wanted it to go somewhere to someone "who, at least understood tubes". He had looked up my phone number and asked if I could help locate someone who would really appreciate old tube stuff like that.
I happen to know that the Admiral Nimitz Museum of the Pacific in Fredricksburg is in the process of restoring a WWII PT boat and a TCS Radio system is a PT boat radio. Presently I'm working to get that radio from Beaumont to Fredricksburg. Turns out he has has a son who works for Dell in Austin. He said it didn't have a dual dynamotor PS but I may be able to scrounge one up here or get one from Robert Downs (military surplus dealer in Houston) if he still has them.
The old gentleman is really, really pleased..........now to pull it all off.
