[Boatanchors] List owner and e-Bay

I am an administrator of a couple of lists but not an
owner. The list owner has the absolute right to decide what
is to be posted there with the understanding that it must be
within the acceptable practices of the list machine
operator, in this case QTH.net. Some lists permit
advertising within some limits, some forbid all advertising.
The lists I co-administrate permit advertising on Fridays
only. When I say advertising I mean offers to buy and sell
by individuals.
As a rule, most lists consider pointers to auctions,
whether eBay or others, unethical. Again, not all. It is
usually considered more correct to post offers to sell with
a named price, directly to those who might want to buy.
Negotiations for sales should be carried out via _private_
e-mail, NOT on the list. The list owner is not considered
to have any responsibility for the sale other than
unsubscribing anyone who consistently cheats customers.
I think on a list like this which is dedicated to very
old equipment the list owner must make provision for those
who need parts or want to trade parts. Since no one should
be expected to give stuff away all the time it may become
selling.
I also think that there are times when reference to an
auction sale must be allowed provided its not just promotion
for a sale by the person posting it.
Again, the decision as to what can and can't be posted
is entirely at the discretion of the list owner. Members
have the choice of unsubscribing or even creating a new list
if they disagree with the rules sufficiently. But, keep in
mind that these lists are NOT democratic, they are strictly
a dictatorship of the owner and actions must be understood
in that light.
