[Boatanchors] Johnson Viking 500

I tend to agree with this assessment. Completeness, working condition,
overall presentability are all part of the equation, along with
desirability/demand of course.

A couple drawbacks to the transmitter include the separate power supply
(some see this as a plus), limited HF coverage (10-80m only), and the
inexplicable pin jacks on the back apron, of which the HV jack is known to
split and cause shorts that can take out fuses are best, iron at worst.
They probably seemed like a good idea at the time, and it's clear that
Johnson never thought this gear would still be in use 10-20 years down the
road according to Edgar's comments on paint.

Some still look back to the feeding frenzy of 6-10 years ago for pricing,
which has long since subsided. It really gets down to whether you're a user
or collector at heart. It's much easier to value the utility of a piece of
gear than to place a value on the emotion attached to it by a current or
previous owner. 'Fair market value' tends to get distorted by the eBay
convenience/big audience factor. For every one that sells high on eBay,
several sell privately for a fraction of the cost. But I'd guess the
$1K-$2K range for a decent working unit is about average.

There's a recent thread on AMfone.net about a nearly new-in-box example
found recently in AZ. You don't have to be a member to view it:

He posted a video on Youtube showing it in operation. The link is in the
thread.
