Hi Jay,

Personally, I believe that a subscriber should donate however much that 
he/she believes they can afford to contribute. It is 'suggested' by current 
ownership of the 'mailman.qth.net' lists that a contribution of $25 per year 
would be about right. However, this amount is NOT for a single list! You 
could be subscribed to one or fifty lists! You are not expected, or even 
asked, to donate for each list you are subscribed to!

While I fully concur that most subscribers receive their donation back over 
the course of a year in answers to questions, technical assistance, 
buying/selling of parts or equipment and so forth, I also believe that 
keeping these lists operating is important. Perhaps, even critical.

Although there are other lists available, the 'QTH.NET' lists, as well as 
'QSL.NET' web sites etc., have proven themselves to be among the best, if 
not the best, available on the Internet. The information contained within 
these lists archives is second to none! As far as I am aware, the archives 
now extend back to about 1998. In any event, there is enough technical data 
there to fill dozens of books!

Please keep in mind that you will not be penalized in any way if you decide 
not to contribute to the lists owners! Also bear in mind that I receive 
absolutely nothing for my efforts as a list manager! It is totally a 
voluntary effort on my part, as well as all others who perform like 
services.

Yes, list managers are "now expected" to contribute $25 for every list they 
manage. This was not so in years gone by.

It is totally "up to you" as to whether you contribute to the operation of 
these lists or not. The question to ask yourself Jay, is to where will you 
be if these lists should not exist come tomorrow? Not a threat, just a 
thought.
