That's been my approach as well. For an unusual rig. I'll remove even the 
wax bypass caps , heat them till I can float off the original paper sleeve 
with the nomenclature and manufacturer logo. I'll put in a new tubular poly 
cap, form an end cap disk out of black cardboard then drop beeswax over 
them...they really come out looking good. I've only done a couple this way 
but when I'm working on such a thing I'm not in a big hurry....

A special vintage piece deserves no less IMHO.
