Ian,

Most likely the captive housing is a pressed fitting.  Much like those 
that hold the threads for the green screws in an R-390A.

Once pulled out, an equivalent replacement, captive nuts like those 
provided by Harbor Freight or some others, would most likely be the 
method behind this.

I don't believe you'll succeed in getting one put back, without the 
specialized tool and another screw/captive assembly.
