1:18 scale is a common scale for aircraft models and diecast auto/truck
models. I ran into it in making my WWII and newer aircraft fleet models to
hang from the ceiling. I started with 1:18 fighters. Really nice. Then
moved on to bombers. Oops, these puppies get really big at that scale.
What's more most aren't available at that size. I really wanted all to be
of the same scale. Nope! To get B-36 and B-52 one must move to 1:72 scale
(and they are still approaching 3 feet in wingspan and over 2 feet long).
Others in between 1:48 and 1:24 are sometimes available. At 1:72 (the only
size B-36 and B-52 were available with any detail), fighter planes end up an
inch or two in length - not much detail at that size.
That said, 1/18 of an inch comes around frequently.
