I never heard that term untlil Newkirk published that column.  I
thought it was cloying and sentimental.  You all can argue about its
origins but it is still a dumb term.  That's because we have a
perfectly good one already:  mentor.  Or just, "the guy who got me
started."   Why does ham radio (or any field) have to invent special
words that are unnecessary?
