Encourage him to actually read a text that teaches him about radio and
electronics.  Don't just point him to some computer QandA thing that
will turn him into a no-code dummy ham who doesn't know the difference
between a tube and a transistor.  Those on-line Q and A things are one
step short of just giving licenses away--folks use them to drill and
memorize and become hams but don't know which end of a soldering iron
to pick up.

The old Navy electronics training books are great textbooks.
