Do NOT make he mistake of using an out-of-date license study guide.
Attempting to use obsolete material will do a great disservice to the
potential applicant. If you purchase used books, make sure of 2
things; (1) be certain the material is for the current version of the
pool (each pool is updated every 4 years), for whichever element is
applicable, and (2) refrain from purchasing marked up books. Someone
else's highlighting may be wrong!
Along with a study guide, running the practice exams from a site like
AA9PW.com until the applicant can consistently score at or above 85%
will almost guarantee a first-time pass.
Excellent study guides are published by Gordon West, WB6NOA, and the
ARRL. The ARRL version is a bit more comprehensive, with more
background and detail of the "why" of the questions and their answers,
the Gordon West versions are more concise. Each has its advantages.
Both are available on-line, either from the ARRL
(http://www.arrl.org/licensing-education-training ) or the W5YI group.(
