Like all old hams he spent a lot of time on antennas.  W5PYT's site had 
so much wire in the air up about 100 ft. that a bird couldn't fly 
without injury for 1/4 mile around the site.  Couple 500 watts with an 
efficient antenna and you have a signal like Bill's.
