I am still hunting for the problem with my 270 - not 260- which was my mistake.
I have received many suggestions/tips and they are all most appreciated.
I will report what I find in a few days. My 270 has worked flawlessly but all of a sudden the RX1 scale will not zero when the leads are "shorted." The needle sits on half scale with little movement when I turn the zeroing pot on the front panel.
Replaced battery with a new EverReady and tested all the resistors with another meter. This unit even smells new with absolutely no corrosion on the battery terminals. It had all the indications of a weak battery but that is not the problem.
Now that I have a schematic I can begin to really troubleshoot the meter.
More later ...
Thanks to all those that responded to my email.

What position is the main selector in and what scale also what position are the other selectors in ? One of my main jobs for Conrail Corp was repairing Simpson meters. Do you have a complete schematic or the abreviated one that usually comes with the meter?

Jack, it is a Simpson 270 and yes, when you touch the leads, you are setting the meter for infinity.
The meter stays in the middle of the scale with some variation when you ajust the pot.
Thanks

I have rebuilt many of these meters. I don't understand what you are trying to do .you should get 0 with the leads shorted and infinity with the leads open. I take it that you are using the ohms position and scale.

I have a problem with my late model Simpson 260 multimeter
Although I have replaced the 1.5 volt battery, I still cannot adjust the meter movement to infinity when the two leads are shorted.
I have to dig out my instruction book that just has the schematic.
I suspect a bad resistor but that is just a guess.
There has to be a technician among these three groups that can assist me.
Thank you
